The Calvary Methodist Church Choir, which was first christened the Fante Society Methodist Church Choir, was born in 1937. The then Singing Band Leader Late S. H. Wilson selected some of the young members of the Singing Band and organized them into a Choir. Divine Services were then being held at the Methodist School at James Town. The new Choir was in need of an organist, a meeting place and access to an organ. Fortunately, Brother Frank A. Arthur, a Customs Officer and the Organist of the newly formed Takoradi Methodist Church Choir, arrived in Accra on transfer just in the nick of time and undertook to conduct choir practices in the late S. H. Wilson’s house at Korle-Worko. The meeting days were fixed for Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
The first Electric Organ (Golden) presented to the Fante Society and the choir was donated by Brother Albert Enchia, a patron of the Choir.
AIM The Choir’s main aim is Evangelism Through Singing.
MEMBERSHIP The Choir is intergenerational and open to all. Membership of the Calvary Methodist Church Choir stands at 120 and it is made up of 72 females and 48 males. The activities of the choir have attracted young ones who have joined from time to time to beef up the strength of the aged. Members of the Junior Choir on being enrolled in the SSS join the Choir. The Junior Choir is progressing steadily under the tutelage of Sis. Hope Acquah and others who are sacrificing to tap the talents of the young ones who will in future take up the mantle from aging members. If this trend continues, a new phase will emerge in the choir in the new millennium and Calvary Choir will eventually be rejuvenated.
Calvary Methodist Singing Band In order to improve song ministration of the Sunday School at James Town, then known as the Mfantse Asor, some members were organized into a Singing Group under the leadership of the late T.G. Impraim for more regular singing practices. The Singing Band is thus almost as old as Calvary Society. The late S.H. Wilson, a renowned Musician took over from Mr. Impraim in 1929. Sometime later, the Band was renamed ‘Fante Sunday School Choir.’ In 1942, Brothers E. K. B. Odoom, G. H. Odoom and Brother S. H.Wilson took a bold step to put the Choir on a proper footing. In 1946, the approval of the Leaders’ Meeting was obtained to rename the ‘Choir’ a Singing Band, and the Singing Band came into being. The Singing Band has been blessed at various times of its existence with competent and dedicated Teachers like Brothers B. A. Ocran, T.A. Richardson, Ato Scott Benin, Forson, Aboagye and K.
