The Methodist Church, Ghana practices the Episcopal system  which it adopted by Proclamation  in the year 2000. It is the system whereby the Ministers are Bishops, Deacons etc.  The Head of the Church is designated Presiding Bishop and addressed Most Reverend. The Head of the Dioceses are called Bishop and addressed Right Reverend. The Circuits are headed by Superintendent Ministers and designated Very Reverend.  The Societies’ Ministers are either Superintendent Ministers or Circuit Ministers i.e. Very Rev, Rev. in some cases, the Minister is a Deacon.

The structure of the Methodist Church is as follows:

The Conference is the highest body in the Church. It meets bi-annually in August at a venue fixed at the previous Conference. It is made up of the Presiding Bishop, Lay President, Administrative Bishops, the Headquarters staff (These are Directors of the Boards etc.) and members elected from the Synods. It is at Conferences that most of the Church’s decisions are taken. These decisions bind the Church.

The Synod is the highest body in the Dioceses.  Each year, Synods are held in each Diocese hosted by Circuits. The Synod is constituted by the Bishop, the Lay Chairman members elected from the Societies. Officers of the Diocese office are also members. Members of Conference living in the Diocese are also members of the Synod.  At the Synod, members render account of their stewardship in the Diocese during the year. Members also discuss the way forward in evangelism, church management etc. 

The Quarterly Meeting is held in the Circuits in like vain. The Ministers if the Circuit and all Leaders, Officers of the Circuit and Societies are members. It is the highest and major decision making body of the Circuit. The Circuit is the union of Societies, sometimes in a particular locality. It is headed by a Superintendent Minister.

The Society is the Church, it is the key body and is headed by a Superintendent Minister or a Minister. At the Society level, the Leaders’ Meeting is the highest body and is made up of Leaders, Society officers, Committee Chairmen/Secretaries and Ministers of the Society. Members must belong to Societies first to be members of the Methodist Church.
