Situated opposite the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, off Barnes Road, Adabraka, Accra, Calvary Methodist Church is one of the premier Methodist Churches in Ghana today. Born out of immigrant Fante workers then resident in Accra, the Church has seen many years of successes and failures. It was the aim of this Group, the “Mfante Korye Kuw”, to bring together children of Akan descent to learn, speak, read and write the Fante Language. After permission had been granted by the Rev. D. MacLean Bruce, Superintendent of the Accra Circuit, a Sunday School was established in 1926. Among the pioneer teachers of the School were Messrs S. B. Baisie, T. G. Impraim, J. K. Nelson, S. H. Wilson and Mesdames Mercy de-Graft, Alice Ainooson and Blankson. The Sunday school in due course began a late afternoon Church service for the Fantes at Freeman Methodist Memorial Chapel, which was close by. It was held in the afternoon to make way for the Sunday evening service of the Worshippers of the Freeman Methodist Memorial Chapel. A Singing Band was formed to help improve the quality of singing during the afternoon Divine services. The singing improved considerably especially with the introduction of songs from the ‘Sankey Hymn Book’. The Synod of the Methodist Church held in Accra in 1926 further boosted the Sunday school, for its active participation in activities of the Synod was a great asset. The members’ turn out, especially that of the women in traditional hair dressing (takuwa) adorned with hairpins and yellow wool, was exceptional and succeeded in drawing many new members to the School. No wonder a Sunday morning service was begun soon thereafter. From then on, the Society has not looked back. By 1950, the growth of the Church had compelled its leaders to look for accommodation elsewhere. The Minister of the Society at the time, Rev. Noel L. Warmann, and the Leaders secured the present site and a fund was launched for a new Chapel. On 3rd July 1965, the chapel was dedicated and named ‘Calvary Methodist Church’. The then President of the Conference, the Rev. F. C. F Grant, performed the opening ceremony. A list of Ministers of the Society can be found hereThe Calvary Society has also given birth to many Societies that have grown into Circuits within the Accra Diocese. These are:
The Church also established the Immanuel Methodist Church, Airport, Accra. It is currently nursing two Societies namely Agyiringano Society, East Legon and Pantang Society, Pantang.
75th Anniversary Celebrations Last year, 2001 marked 75th year of Calvary Society’s existence. A yearlong programme of activities under the theme “One Body broken and shared” included a float from the original site of the Church, James Town to the present site, Symposia, Visitations etc. The climax of the activities was the official opening and dedication of a multi-billion cedi Calvary Methodist Educational Complex at Agyiringaro, East Legon on Saturday 20th October 2001. A Thanksgiving service came off on Sunday 21st October 2001. The Presiding Bishop and the Diocesan Bishop were the main Officiants of the said Service. Members resplendent in the yellow and blue Anniversary Cloth joyfully sang the Anniversary song and danced to the glory of God. |
